A Letter from P'Fella

Make education more accessible  📖

Guess what is not okay? The cost of "interview prep".

There is enough emotional stress during this period. The last thing a future plastic surgeon need is financial stress.

So that's why P'Fella thought he'll get involved - to create a not-for-profit definitive companion to the plastic surgery interview, called thePlasticsInterview.

Check it out

Here's why thePlasticsInterview was created:

1. We need a level playing field

Everyone should have equal access to resources to help them succeed. £800 courses can only be afforded by a select few.

Surely a contributing factor to the lack of diversity in plastic surgery?

2. What does a face-to-face course ACTUALLY achieve?

Fine, some courses are good. in the short term. experience & insights are usually forgotten within the first week

Courses are like reading the blurb of a novel. you have context, but you wouldn't go to a book club

24/7 access is key ✅

3. Courses prey on your FOMO

Interview decides your career, right?!
you've paid £££ to resolve your FOMO.

All plastic surgery courses are similar (trust me, I've looked at them all)

a FOMO increase = a price increase.

📝

Articles of the Week

2 articles you should know

📔 What makes an excellent plastic surgery trainee??
P Hackenberger et al PRS Global Open: January 2022

Aim: Identify the important features in excellent trainees
Methods: a survey of 90 plastic surgeons and trainees.
Results: "Excellent" trainees have prepared for operations, good bedside manner & personality, leadership, technical expertise.
Conclusion: "excellence" is reflective of life and work experience.

📔 Glue or suture peripheral nerves in hand surgery??
Sallam et al, Journal of Hand Surgery, May 2021.

Aim: is glue non-inferior to traditional suturing?
Methods: RCT assessing motor and sensory recovery, operative time.
Results: 85 patients with similar outcomes but glue had shorter operation.
Conclusion: glue is great!

P'Fella's Comment: it's rare for there to be an isolated nerve injury. These patients were splinted for 3 weeks post-operatively. Tendon or muscle belly damage is a confounder in this study that should be accounted for.
