Clinical Scenario

A 35-year-old female presents with severe, sharp, stabbing pain and tenderness in her left thumb, especially intense with cold exposure or pressure. The pain often wakes her at night. On examination, there is a small, bluish discolouration under the nail of the affected thumb.

Objectives:

  1. Understand the classical presentation of a glomus tumour.
  2. Describe the pathophysiology of a glomus tumour.
  3. Provide a differential diagnosis for a painful digit swelling.
  4. Outline the investigations indicated for a glomus tumour.
  5. Discuss the treatment options available.
