A Letter from P'Fella
Sci-Hub is key. Β Here's why...
This is interesting.
Plastic Surgeons dislike "paying to publish" much more than "paying to read". You can see the raw data in the twitter poll below.
It's interesting because it shows the general disdain for the predatory "open" journals that are "free to read". Yes, they are free but they are certainly not free. As the saying goes, there is no such thing as a free lunch.
It must be hard for people at PRS Global Open (yes, I know they read this), to see stats like this. It's directly against their business model. But there is a big confounder in this twitter poll - that is, the impact Sci-Hub has had on journal access. The issue of paying or signing up or going through a university portal is gone. You can get any article in the world now in just a few clicks.
You can see the impact of Sci-Hub by the stats published by it's founder below. She outlines that millions and millions of articles she has made accessible! Its pretty amazing.

Articles of the Week
Let's focus on Breast this week
Basile et al, PRS Journal Jan 2022.
Aim: is early exercise after breast augmentation is safe?
Methods: prospective RCT to measure complications, scar, and PROMs comparing excerise at 7 days and 12 weeks.
Results: 225 participants showed no difference in outcomes.
Conclusions: Early excercise does not increase complication or reoperation rates or cause a reduction in scar quality after 1 year. PROM's increased in the exercise groups.
Duncan et al, PRS Journal Jan 2022
Aim: better understanding of fascial & ligamentous breast structures
Methods: review of anatomical, clinical, histologic, and radiologic studies
Results: 6 distinct breast fascial structures in the literature.
Conclusions:
- Cooper ligaments divide the breast parenchyma.
- Superficial and deep layers of superficial fascia created a breest βpocket,β
- Horizontal septum is a reliable neurovascular landmark.
- Vertical septum is a newly discovered fascial structure
Ludolph et al, JPRAS
Aim: look at perfusion patterns to determine ideal zoning in abdominal-based autologous breast reconstruction.
Methods: Indocyanine green angiography for analysis on 100 flaps.
Results: No major differences in size of the perfusion area and for lateral or medial located perforators to cross the midline.
Conclusions: Abdominal zonings play a minor role
